To provide a clear procedure for maintaining appropriate communication with a pupil’s Youth Offending Team worker while the pupil remains on the school roll in criminal-justice custody, including educational needs, progress, contact during the sentence and return-to-school resettlement planning.

1. Scope

This procedure applies where a pupil at [school name] remains on the school roll while in criminal-justice custody. It is for maintained and academy primary and secondary schools in England.

The procedure should be applied where appropriate to the pupil’s circumstances and relevant professional arrangements.

2. Responsibility

The school’s designated contact for this procedure is [responsible school contact]. The contact should coordinate communication with the pupil’s Youth Offending Team worker and relevant school colleagues.

3. Procedure

3.1 Confirm the communication arrangement

Confirm the pupil’s Youth Offending Team worker and the agreed communication route with [relevant professional contact]. Record the agreed contact details and any relevant professional arrangements in the pupil’s education and resettlement records.

3.2 Discuss educational needs

Communicate with the Youth Offending Team worker while the pupil is in custody and remains on the school roll to discuss the pupil’s educational needs where appropriate.

3.3 Share and discuss progress

Discuss the pupil’s educational progress with the Youth Offending Team worker where appropriate. Record the progress information shared and any agreed actions in [school record location].

3.4 Maintain contact during the sentence

Maintain contact with the Youth Offending Team throughout the sentence where appropriate. Use the agreed communication route and record each contact in [yot contact log location].

3.5 Plan return to school

Discuss the pupil’s return to school upon release with the Youth Offending Team worker where appropriate. Record the return-to-school planning and any agreed resettlement actions in [resettlement plan location].

3.6 Support resettlement

Use the maintained communication and agreed planning to support the pupil’s educational resettlement where appropriate. Update the relevant education and resettlement records when arrangements change.

4. Records

Keep the Youth Offending Team contact logs, education and resettlement plans, progress information shared and return-to-school planning records in [school record location].

The school should follow its applicable information-sharing arrangements when communicating about the pupil’s circumstances and return to school.
