Scope

This guidance applies, where relevant, to primary and secondary local-authority-maintained schools and academies in England delivering statutory relationships education, relationships and sex education, and health education provision.

Curriculum context

As part of the relevant statutory relationships and health education provision, pupils are taught about online safety and online harms.

Teaching content

Teaching should cover what positive, healthy and respectful online relationships look like.

Teaching should cover the effects of pupils’ online actions on others.

Teaching should cover how to recognise and display respectful behaviour online.

Age-appropriate and relevant teaching

Throughout these subjects, online safety and appropriate behaviour should be addressed in an age-appropriate way that is relevant to pupils’ lives.
