This procedure applies to [school name], a maintained or academy school in England, in its capacity as a workplace and employer of school staff.
Purpose and scope
The school must provide adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel so that employees who are injured or taken ill at work receive immediate attention. The level of provision must be determined by the circumstances of the workplace and by the school's first-aid needs assessment.
The arrangements cover the equipment, facilities and personnel provided for employees, including the contents and locations of first-aid boxes, whether a first-aid room is required, whether trained first-aiders are needed, and any appointed-person arrangements required by the assessment.
First-aid needs assessment
The school will carry out and retain a first-aid needs assessment for the workplace. The assessment will determine what first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel are adequate and appropriate for the school's circumstances.
The assessment will record the school's decisions on whether trained first-aiders are needed, what should be included in first-aid boxes, where first-aid boxes are located, and whether a first-aid room is required. The assessment record is held at [first aid needs assessment location].
When carrying out the assessment, the school should consider whether provision for people who are not employees is appropriate.
Equipment and facilities
The school will provide the first-aid equipment and facilities identified as adequate and appropriate by the first-aid needs assessment.
First-aid boxes will contain the items identified by the assessment and will be located at [first aid box locations]. The assessment will state whether a first-aid room is required; where one is provided, its location is [first aid room location].
Personnel
The school will provide the first-aid personnel identified as adequate and appropriate by the first-aid needs assessment, including trained first-aiders where the assessment indicates that they are needed.
Appointed person where a first-aider is unnecessary
If the first-aid needs assessment indicates that a first-aider is unnecessary, the school will appoint a person to take charge of the first-aid arrangements. The appointed person is [appointed person name].
The appointed person will look after the first-aid equipment and facilities and call the emergency services when required.
The appointed person may provide emergency cover, within their role and competence, where a first-aider is absent because of unforeseen circumstances. Annual leave does not count as an unforeseen circumstance for this purpose.
Communication of arrangements
The school will communicate its first-aid arrangements to employees, including the locations of first-aid equipment and facilities, the personnel available under the arrangements, and how to contact the appointed person where that role applies.
The current arrangements are available at [first aid arrangements location], and the contact route for first-aid assistance is [first aid contact route].
Implementation of assessment decisions
The school will implement the equipment, facilities and personnel decisions recorded in its first-aid needs assessment. Where the assessment indicates that an appointed person is required, the appointment and responsibilities will be recorded with the assessment.
The person responsible for maintaining this procedure and the associated arrangements is [first aid arrangements responsible person].
