Use this procedure where a compulsory-school-age pupil has been suspended or permanently excluded on disciplinary grounds from a maintained school or academy, the pupil's name remains on the admission register, and no alternative provision has otherwise been arranged.
1. Confirm that the procedure applies
Confirm the pupil's compulsory-school-age status, the type and disciplinary basis of the suspension or permanent exclusion, the school type, the pupil's continued entry on the admission register, and whether alternative provision has already been arranged.
Record the relevant pupil and exclusion details in [exclusion record location], including the exclusion start date of [exclusion start date].
2. Identify the sixth consecutive school day
Count the consecutive school days of the suspension or permanent exclusion and identify the sixth consecutive school day as [sixth consecutive school day].
Where the conditions in section 1 apply, arrange alternative provision from the sixth consecutive school day of the suspension or permanent exclusion.
3. Arrange and record alternative provision
Arrange the alternative provision and record the placement details in [alternative provision record location], including the provider or school at which the pupil will attend, the start date of [alternative provision start date], and the relevant commissioning details.
For each session in which the pupil attends alternative provision, record attendance using the appropriate attendance code in regulation 10(3) Table 2.
If the pupil attends another school at which they are a registered pupil, record the session using Code D for dual registration at another school.
4. Maintain the records
Keep the exclusion or suspension record, the alternative-provision placement and commissioning records, and the attendance coding record together in [pupil exclusion record location].
