Fields in brackets are completed when you adapt this template.
This guidance applies only if the school has chosen to provide an automated external defibrillator (AED) following its first-aid needs assessment.
Whether an AED must be provided
Health and safety legislation does not require the school to provide an AED. If the school has identified through its needs assessment that it wishes to provide one, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) apply to that AED.
Written instructions
Where the school provides an AED, relevant users must be able to access information and written instructions on how to use it. Use the manufacturer's instructions for the AED provided by the school, or equivalent written operating instructions, at [aed instructions location].
Training
Fuller training is not required by this guidance. Fuller training is likely to increase user confidence and is included in the syllabus for First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work courses.
Using the AED
Before using the AED, access and follow the manufacturer's instructions or the equivalent written operating instructions provided for this AED. If the instructions cannot be accessed, contact [aed responsible contact].
