Activity assessed
Planning and review of first-aid provision before an educational visit or other off-site activity, including consideration of activity hazards, location, group needs, access to emergency help and additional items for specialised activities. Applicability remains conditional on the school conducting an applicable off-site activity.
Assess each hazard and its controls against your site before use. Template ratings require local review.
Hazards and controls
The first-aid provision required for the planned activity, location, group and circumstances may not be identified before the activity takes place.
- Existing controls
- To be assessed locally.
- Proposed controls
- The visit leader should assess the level of first-aid provision needed before the activity. Record the assessment basis, including the activity hazards, location, group needs and access to emergency help. Where the activity is specialised, identify any additional first-aid items that may be necessary. Review the assessment if the activity, location, group or arrangements change.
Local assessment and additional controls
A suitable travelling first-aid kit may not be available for the off-site activity or educational visit.
- Existing controls
- To be assessed locally.
- Proposed controls
- Provide a suitable travelling first-aid kit for the activity, subject to the outcome of the visit-specific assessment. As a minimum, check whether the kit includes a leaflet giving general first-aid advice, 6 individually wrapped sterile adhesive dressings, 1 large sterile unmedicated dressing, 2 individually wrapped triangular bandages preferably sterile, 2 safety pins, individually wrapped moist cleansing wipes and 2 pairs of disposable gloves. Record any activity-specific additions separately.
Local assessment and additional controls
Additional first-aid items needed for a specialised activity may not be identified or made available.
- Existing controls
- To be assessed locally.
- Proposed controls
- For each specialised activity, identify the foreseeable first-aid needs and any additional items required. Record the items, responsible person, availability check and any conditions under which the activity would need to be reconsidered. Do not treat additional items as required where the activity is not specialised or the assessment does not identify a need.
Local assessment and additional controls
The first-aid provision may not reflect the location or the practical access to emergency help during the activity.
- Existing controls
- To be assessed locally.
- Proposed controls
- Consider the activity location and access to emergency help when assessing the level of first-aid provision. Record relevant arrangements for obtaining emergency assistance and identify any implications for the equipment, personnel or procedures required. Confirm arrangements again if the location or route changes.
Local assessment and additional controls
The first-aid provision may not reflect the needs of the participating group.
- Existing controls
- To be assessed locally.
- Proposed controls
- Consider the needs of the group when determining first-aid provision, including any relevant individual needs known to the visit leader or responsible staff. Record only information necessary for planning and emergency response, and identify any additional arrangements required. Keep this consideration conditional on the characteristics of the group and the activity.
Local assessment and additional controls
The planned first-aid provision may not be available or suitable when the group departs.
- Existing controls
- To be assessed locally.
- Proposed controls
- Before departure, check the first-aid provision against the completed assessment, including the suitable travelling first-aid kit and any additional items identified for specialised activities. Record outstanding actions and ensure they are resolved or that the activity is reconsidered before proceeding.
