Use this procedure where the school has kitchen gas equipment and an extract system intended to remove gas fumes or leaks during cooking. Apply it to the actual kitchen installation and controls at [site name].
Purpose and operating principle
Where kitchen extraction is used to control gas fumes or leaks, the extract system should be linked to the gas supply so that gas cannot flow while the extract system is not working.
1. Confirm applicability
Before applying this procedure, confirm whether [kitchen location] has gas equipment used during cooking and an extract system intended to remove gas fumes or leaks. If either element is absent, record the reason this procedure does not apply to the installation.
2. Specify the interlock
Define the relevant kitchen gas supply, gas equipment and extract system in the installation specification. Specify that the extract system is linked to the gas supply so that gas cannot flow while the relevant extract system is not working.
Record the installation-specific arrangement, including [gas supply identifier], [extract system identifier] and [interlock control description].
3. Verify the installation
Verify the kitchen equipment and gas-system specification against the actual installation and controls. Confirm that the specified extract system is the system linked to the relevant gas supply.
Record the verification by reference to [kitchen equipment and gas system specification] and identify any discrepancy for corrective action.
4. Test the interlock
Test the interlock using the actual kitchen installation and controls. Verify that gas cannot flow while the relevant extract system is not working.
Record the test date, the installation tested, the result and the person or organisation carrying out the test in [interlock test record]. Do not treat the interlock as verified where the required result has not been demonstrated or the test result is not available.
5. Manage defects and corrective action
Record any defect, failure or discrepancy affecting the link between the extract system and the gas supply in [defect and corrective action record]. Describe the affected equipment or control, the required corrective action and the person or organisation responsible for addressing it.
Retain the relevant maintenance certificate or other maintenance record for the installation in [maintenance record location].
6. Review the arrangement
Review this procedure when the kitchen equipment, gas system, extract system or interlock controls change, and when a defect or corrective action indicates that the documented arrangement no longer reflects the actual installation.
The person responsible for the installation at [responsible role] should ensure that the specification, interlock test records, maintenance certificates and defect or corrective-action records remain identifiable for the applicable kitchen installation.
