This procedure applies to maintained and academy primary and secondary schools in England where gas fittings are present and the school appoints or uses people to install, maintain or repair them.
Requirement
Work on gas fittings in school premises, including installation, maintenance and repair, must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is qualified to do the work. It is illegal for anyone else to do it.
Procedure
Before appointing or allowing [contractor name or staff member] to carry out [work description] on gas fittings, the person responsible for the work at [school name] must check that the person is registered with Gas Safe and qualified for the specific work.
Check the person's Gas Safe ID card. The card shows the type of work the person is qualified to do and whether the qualifications are up to date.
Compare the work category shown on the card with the work to be carried out. The verification must match the person's current registration and the specific work category.
If the registration or qualification does not cover the specific work, or its current status cannot be confirmed, do not allow the person to carry out that gas-fitting work. Refer the matter to [responsible role] before the work proceeds.
Apply this check before installation, maintenance or repair work is carried out on the school's gas fittings.
