School Asbestos Waste Disposal and Consignment Procedure

Applicability
Use this procedure when asbestos-containing waste is generated by school works or by works commissioned by the school.
Procedure
1. Identify and classify the waste
Identify the material as asbestos-containing waste and record the waste description as [waste description]. Treat the waste in accordance with the applicable hazardous-waste requirements.
2. Contain the waste
Ensure that asbestos-containing waste is properly contained before disposal arrangements are made.
3. Arrange authorised disposal
Arrange for the asbestos-containing waste to be disposed of in accordance with the applicable hazardous-waste requirements. Where disposal is contracted out, record the contractor as [authorised contractor name].
4. Obtain the waste consignment note
When the work has been contracted out, disposal is the responsibility of the contractor. The school must obtain a waste consignment note to confirm that the asbestos was appropriately disposed of. Record the consignment note reference as [waste consignment note reference].
5. Retain disposal evidence
Retain the waste classification and transfer records, contractor disposal documentation, waste consignment note, and evidence of containment and authorised disposal.
Completion record
Record the disposal date as [disposal date] and retain the related disposal evidence with the school’s asbestos waste records.
