Responsibilities

The school’s nominated contact for this procedure is [school asbestos contact]. Where the work is contracted out, the contractor responsible for the work and disposal is [asbestos waste contractor].

Where work has been contracted out, disposal is the responsibility of the contractor. The school remains responsible for obtaining a waste consignment note confirming that the asbestos was appropriately disposed of.

Procedure

1. Confirm applicability

Before arranging disposal, confirm that asbestos-containing waste has been generated by school works or by works commissioned by the school. If no asbestos-containing waste has been generated, this procedure does not apply.

2. Classify and contain the waste

Identify and record the waste classification required for the waste. Ensure that the asbestos-containing waste is properly contained before it is transferred for disposal.

3. Confirm the disposal arrangement

Confirm whether the work and disposal have been contracted out. Apply the applicable hazardous-waste requirements to the disposal arrangement. Where a contractor is responsible for disposal, obtain confirmation from the contractor that the disposal arrangement covers the asbestos-containing waste.

4. Obtain the waste consignment note

When disposal is contracted out, obtain a waste consignment note from the contractor to confirm that the asbestos was appropriately disposed of.

5. Retain the disposal evidence

Retain the waste classification and transfer records, contractor disposal documentation and waste consignment note at [asbestos waste record location]. Retain evidence that the waste was contained and disposed of through the authorised disposal arrangement.

Completion record

The person responsible for the school’s records is [asbestos waste record owner]. Record the date of disposal as [asbestos waste disposal date] and the waste consignment note reference as [waste consignment note reference].
