This procedure applies where asbestos or suspected asbestos is present in school buildings and people may work in, use or respond to the premises. Visitor, community-use and contractor arrangements must reflect the actual site and activities.
Information for staff and other building users
People who work in or use the building must be given information about the specific locations of asbestos-containing materials in the rooms or areas they use.
Information must explain which work or activities must be avoided because they may disturb asbestos-containing materials. The relevant information for [building user area] is available at [asbestos information location].
People who work in or use the building must also be told what to do in the event of accidental damage. The site-specific accidental-damage arrangements are set out at [accidental damage arrangements location].
Contractors and people undertaking work
Before work is undertaken, contractors and others undertaking work in the school must receive information about asbestos materials that may be disturbed.
Contractor arrangements must include appropriate communication of asbestos information and training arrangements for contractors. The relevant arrangements for [contractor work area] are provided through [contractor information route].
Parents, carers and visitors
The asbestos management plan should clearly set out the information made available to parents, carers and other visitors who may be liable to disturb asbestos materials, as identified through a risk assessment.
Where buildings are used outside normal school hours or by community users, the controls and information arrangements for that use must be addressed. The arrangements for [visitor or community use activity] are described at [visitor community information route].
Emergency services
Information about the location and condition of asbestos or suspected asbestos must be made available to emergency services.
The asbestos management plan should record how this information will be provided. An up-to-date copy of the asbestos register should be available to emergency services without requiring access to the building.
The emergency-services access arrangement for the current asbestos register is [emergency services asbestos information arrangement].
Site-specific arrangements
The site-specific asbestos information point is [asbestos information point]. The person or service responsible for providing information is [asbestos information contact].
