Fields in brackets are completed when you adapt this template.
This guidance is for maintained and academy primary and secondary schools in England. Use of the example templates is optional. A school may adapt them or use them to inform its own allergy safety policy and Individual Healthcare Plans (IHPs), taking account of its local arrangements.
Using the example policy template
Use the example allergy safety policy as source material when developing the school's own policy. The example text can help a school fulfil its statutory duty to have an allergy safety policy, but the school's final document should reflect its own arrangements.
Record the local policy owner as [allergy policy owner] and the date of the school's current policy as [policy date].
Using the Individual Healthcare Plan template
Use the example Individual Healthcare Plan template when creating an IHP for a pupil with allergies. Adapt the template so that the completed plan records the information and arrangements relevant to that pupil and the school.
The pupil's IHP should be held or accessed in accordance with the school's local arrangements. Record the relevant local arrangement as [ihp storage and access arrangement].
Record keeping and training around adrenaline auto-injectors
The example materials can also be used to inform the school's record keeping and training arrangements around the use of adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) in school.
Describe the school's local arrangements for AAI records in [aai recordkeeping arrangement] and its local training arrangements in [aai training arrangement].
Adapting the documents for local use
Before using either template, identify which parts need to be adapted for the school. Confirm the document names, roles, locations, communication arrangements and other local details required by the school's own policy and pupil plans.
The person responsible for approving the school's adapted documents is [document approver]. The school's local contact for questions about allergy arrangements is [allergy contact].
Local adoption
The school may use the examples in full, adapt them, or use them only as a reference when developing its own policy and IHPs. Any documents used in the school should be identified as the school's own current documents and should match the arrangements the school has chosen to operate.
