This scheme applies where the school is an employer, controls premises, or has health and safety responsibilities for others, including maintained and academy schools where those conditions apply.

1. Scope and responsibility

The scheme covers the school’s water systems and describes how identified legionella risks will be prevented or controlled. The systems covered by this scheme are [water systems scope].

The school will appoint a responsible person to manage the arrangements for others. The responsible person for this scheme is [responsible person name], whose role or appointment is [responsible person role].

2. Control scheme

The school will maintain a documented control scheme describing the precautions used to prevent or control legionella risk in its water systems. The scheme will identify the arrangements, responsibilities and management controls that apply to the systems within scope.

The control scheme will be kept at [scheme storage location] and made available to the people responsible for implementing and managing the arrangements.

3. Implementation and management

The responsible person will oversee implementation and management of the precautions established by this scheme. Responsibilities for carrying out the arrangements are assigned as follows: [assigned responsibilities].

The responsible person will ensure that the precautions are monitored and that monitoring information is managed as part of the control arrangements.

4. Monitoring and action

Where monitoring identifies an adverse result or a failure of a precaution, the responsible person will record the issue, arrange appropriate management action and retain the resulting record at [monitoring records location].

The school will keep records of the precautions used to prevent or control legionella risk, together with monitoring information, management actions and records of reviews of the control measures.
