Apply this procedure conditionally to a pupil approaching the end of compulsory school age in a secondary maintained or academy school.
1. Establish whether the age condition is met
Determine whether the pupil will be over compulsory school age by the time the school next meets. A pupil ceases to be of compulsory school age on the last Friday in June of the school year in which the pupil reaches the age of 16.
If the pupil will not be over compulsory school age when the school next meets, do not delete the pupil’s name under Ground L on this basis.
2. Assess the Ground L conditions
Where the pupil will be over compulsory school age by the time the school next meets, assess whether the school has no reasonable grounds to believe that the pupil will attend the school again.
Also assess whether the pupil meets the academic entry requirements for transfer to the school’s sixth form.
3. Make and record the decision
Ground L may apply only where the pupil will be over compulsory school age by the time the school next meets and either the school does not have reasonable grounds to believe that the pupil will attend again, or the pupil does not meet the academic entry requirements for transfer to the school’s sixth form.
Where the Ground L conditions are met and the pupil’s name is deleted, record the decision in the admission register.
