School Alternative Provision After Exclusion Procedure
- Version
- v2
- Updated
- 7 October 2026
This procedure applies to maintained schools and academies in England where a compulsory-school-age pupil is suspended or permanently excluded on disciplinary grounds, remains on the admission register, and has no alternative provision already arranged.
1. Determine whether the procedure applies
Confirm that the pupil is of compulsory school age, that the suspension or permanent exclusion is on disciplinary grounds, that the pupil's name remains on the admission register, and that no alternative provision has otherwise been arranged.
2. Arrange alternative provision
Where the conditions in section 1 apply, arrange alternative provision from the sixth consecutive school day of the suspension or permanent exclusion.
3. Record attendance
For a session in which the pupil attends alternative provision, record attendance using the appropriate attendance code in regulation 10(3) Table 2.
If the pupil attends another school at which they are a registered pupil, record the session using Code D for dual registration at another school.
Where the pupil is suspended or permanently excluded on disciplinary grounds, remains on the admission register, and no alternative provision has been made for the pupil to continue their education, record the session using Code E.
