This guidance applies conditionally where the school controls, plans or uses lifting equipment in the workplace. It is intended for dutyholders and people responsible for controlling lifting equipment, planning lifting operations or using lifting equipment.
Responsibilities and scope
The person responsible for the school's lifting-equipment arrangements is [lifting equipment responsible role]. The arrangements must reflect the school's actual equipment, responsibilities and examination records.
The school should identify the lifting equipment that it controls, plans or uses and maintain an equipment inventory at [lifting equipment inventory location].
Planning and safe use
Lifting operations must be planned and carried out with appropriate attention to safe lifting practices. Anyone involved in planning lifting operations or using lifting equipment should follow the school's arrangements and any applicable examination requirements.
Thorough examination and examination schemes
For equipment subject to LOLER, the school should arrange thorough examination and maintain any relevant examination scheme. Examination reports and related records should be retained at [examination record location].
The responsible role should use examination findings to determine and record the action required, including action in response to any identified defect.
Defects and notifications
When a defect is identified, the school should record the finding, arrange the appropriate response and escalate the matter to [defect escalation role].
Where equipment is owned or provided by another organisation, the school's arrangements should identify how relevant defects and examination findings are notified to [equipment owner or lessor contact role].
Where reporting to the relevant enforcing authority is required, the school's arrangements should identify the responsible role, [enforcing authority reporting role], and the records to be retained.
Records
The school should keep records that identify the equipment, the people responsible for lifting operations or equipment use, examination arrangements, examination findings, actions taken and relevant notifications.
