Alternative provision after exclusion
Use this procedure where [pupil name] is of compulsory school age, has been suspended or permanently excluded on disciplinary grounds, and the school is a maintained school or academy in England. Apply it where alternative provision has not otherwise been arranged.
1. Confirm the circumstances
Confirm and record whether the case is a suspension or permanent exclusion, the exclusion start date of [exclusion start date], the relevant exclusion dates, and whether [pupil name] remains entered in the admission register.
Confirm that the pupil is of compulsory school age and that the exclusion is from the maintained school or academy covered by this procedure.
2. Arrange alternative provision
Arrange alternative provision from the sixth consecutive school day of the suspension or permanent exclusion. Record the date from which the arrangement applies as [sixth consecutive school day].
Record the alternative-provision placement as [alternative provision name], together with the relevant placement details and commissioning arrangements.
3. Record attendance
For each session attended at alternative provision, record attendance using the appropriate attendance code in regulation 10(3) Table 2.
If [pupil name] attends another school at which they are a registered pupil, record the session using Code D, dual registered at another school.
4. Where no alternative provision has been arranged
Where [pupil name] is suspended or permanently excluded on disciplinary grounds, remains entered in the admission register, and no alternative provision has been made to continue their education, record the applicable attendance circumstances using Code E.
