First-aid room suitability checklist

Use this checklist only where the first-aid needs assessment identifies that a first-aid room is necessary and the school provides one.

Verify that a suitable first-aid room is provided.

Verify that the room is easily accessible to stretchers.

Verify that the room is clearly signposted and identified by white lettering or a white cross on a green background, with the sign visible and unobstructed.

Where possible, verify that the room is reserved specifically for providing first aid.

Verify that the room has a sink with hot and cold running water.

Verify that drinking water and disposable cups are available.

Verify that soap and paper towels are available.

Verify that the room has storage for first-aid materials.

Verify that foot-operated refuse containers are provided and lined with yellow, disposable clinical-waste bags, or that a container suitable for the safe disposal of clinical waste is provided.

Verify that an examination or medical couch with waterproof protection is provided.

Verify that clean pillows and blankets are available.

Verify that a chair is provided.

Verify that a telephone or other communication equipment is available.

Verify that a record book is available for recording incidents attended by a first-aider or appointed person.

Verify that a designated first-aider or appointed person has responsibility for supervising the room.
